The American Staffordshire Pitbull Terrior Makes a Loyal Companion
The American Pitbull Terrier is a very strong dog. With their athletic build and great intelligence, they are perfect for agility training, tracking and obedience. If you are looking for a dog that can do one or all of these things, the pitbull is the perfect dog.
Over the years, the american staffordshire pitbull terrier has gottan a ”bum rap”. Because these dogs have at times ended up in the wrong hands, many cities have outlawed them. However, you probably won’t find a more loyal companion.
Accepted for AKC registration back in 1936, the American staffordshire is a dog that loves people and does best when living in an atmosphere wherein he has a job within the family. He will protect his family from any threat which means vigilant training is necessary.
The pitbull is very muscular, and is much stronger than his size lets on. Although graceful, he is quite agile and courageous. These dogs go from about 19-21 inches tall at the withers and to about 65-88 pounds. This may not seem big, but instead medium sized. However, do not let these dogs fool you. They are quite strong.
Training for the American staffordshire terrier should begin about 8 to 10 weeks of age. They are highly responsive dogs, and learn habits quick. You want them to learn good habits, and don’t want to make the mistake of allowing bad behaviors to creep in.
There are plenty of breeders of the American staffordshire. You won’t have difficulty finding a puppy. What you need to do, however, is make sure that the breeder you are talking to has the right credentials to being a good breeder. You do not want to get a puppy from a disreputable breeder. These dogs have been mishandled quite a bit.
Be prepared to go through quite an application process with a proper breeder. The proper breeder wants to make sure you are going to be a reputable owner just as much as you want them to be a good breeder. You will probably need to give them all sorts of information just so they can be sure they are not releasing a puppy to someone who is going to mistreat the dog.
Once you get your puppy home, remember that he is a puppy and start training immediately. You will want to cage train him and also start the potty training process right away. This breed is smart enough to do well quickly.
